The purpose of establishing Old Documents Room in Institute of Taiwan History Academia Sinica is to continue the collection from the period of Taiwan History Field Research Center and archive the old documents in Taiwan. There are around 20 thousand documents in various types, including contracts, business information, educational materials, sacrifice industry data, genealogies, domicile information, and law documents. Additionally, there are lots of old photos and postcards. After managing and filing, they are all opened for researchers from different places. However, the old-fashioned searching system is not convenient for users and staffs and decreases the circulation of these old documents as well. To solve the problem of old documents management and circulation, it is necessary to apply the characteristics of speedy processing of computers. Therefore, the staffs of the Old Documents Room directed by board members of Institute of Taiwan History begin to construct the “Databases of the ITH Old Documents: On-line Catalogs and Images”.
